Washington’s quarterback situation got even more troubling Saturday against the Philadelphia Eagles. Marcus Mariota went back to the locker room during the third quarter to be evaluated for a concussion and a hand injury. He was cleared of a concussion and declared questionable to return because of the hand injury, and was replaced on the next drive by third-stringer Josh Johnson.

Mariota returned to the sideline during the final 30 seconds of the quarter – just after Johnson was intercepted by Cooper DeJean on a third down – without his helmet and with what appeared to be a towel over his right (throwing) hand. He remained out of the game, which the Eagles won 29-18.

Mariota stayed down on the field after an incompletion early in the third quarter, then slowly walked to the sideline as the special teams took the field. He was examined in the medical tent, then emerged with a towel over his right hand and jogged to the locker room with a team athletic trainer. The Eagles scored while Mariota was in the locker room, then tacked on another touchdown shortly after his return, turning Washington’s 10-7 halftime lead into a 21-10 deficit early in the fourth quarter

Johnson, 39, was the only other quarterback available to the Commanders for this game. Starter Jayden Daniels was ruled out for the final three games of the season and declared inactive against the Eagles. And Sam Hartman is on the practice squad and, therefore, ineligible to be the designated emergency third quarterback for Washington.

Johnson is in his 11th season in the NFL and on his 14th NFL team, the most in league history.
